Born in an era of white lab coats, vacuum tubes, and boundless belief in the future, the original M49 defined the sound of recorded voices in the 1950s — a time when science promised miracles and microphones were built as instruments, not products.
PLAN 9 ULTRA is a faithful resurrection of that moment.
Reverse-engineered from original reference microphones and period documentation, PLAN 9 ULTRA preserves the capsule geometry, acoustic architecture, transformer behaviour, and tube operating points that made the M49 legendary. No modern shortcuts. No reinterpretation. Only the careful revival of a design that never needed improvement.
At its heart is the Russian 6S6B-V sub-miniature tube, selected for its stability, linearity, and sonic character when operated in the precise regime demanded by the original M49 circuit. Properly biased and conservatively run, it delivers the depth, smoothness, and low-noise performance required to faithfully re-animate this classic design.
Two capsule voices are available, reflecting the earliest chapters of the M49 story: the supple warmth and intimacy of the M7, and the focused clarity and presence of the K47. Each captures the human voice with its own character, both unmistakably of the era.
In the spirit of mid-century experimentation, PLAN 9 ULTRA also offers discreet control beyond the original brief. A dedicated switch allows the bass cut to be fully defeated, restoring the microphone to its unfiltered low-frequency response, while a second switch enables pure cardioid mode — a focused, direct pattern inspired by early studio and broadcast practice.
Every detail extends to the signal path itself. A premium Binder connector is employed for its mechanical integrity, electrical reliability, and long-term serviceability — a modern precision component chosen to honour the seriousness of the original laboratory instrument.
The name Plan 9 is borrowed from the era’s most infamous science-fiction obsession — secret experiments, classified protocols, and the belief that something extraordinary could be brought back to life through determination and circuitry alone. In that spirit, PLAN 9 ULTRA reanimates a voice from another time.
